To meet the urgent need to address climate change and achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, UN Secretary-General António Guterres is convening a Summit in September 2019 to raise ambition and increase climate action. The race is on. It is a race we can win. It is a race we must win.
We must act decisively to protect our planet from both the coronavirus and the existential threat of climate disruption. The current crisis is an unprecedented wake-up call. We need to turn the recovery into a real opportunity to do things right for the future.

The tell-tale physical signs of climate change, such as increasing land and ocean heat, accelerating sea level rise and melting ice, contributed to making 2019 the second warmest year on record according to a new report compiled by a network led by the World Meteorological Organization. The report documents the increasing impacts of weather and climate events on socio-economic development, human health, migration and displacement, food security and land and marine ecosystems.
The initiatives demonstrate that achieving the 1.5°C goal requires the mobilization of all actors across society – countries, regions, cities, companies, investors, and other organizations – working collaboratively towards reducing emissions to net zero by 2050. The initiatives are organized under the Summit’s nine Action Areas.
